A kit of the Japanese A6M3 Zero Type 32 carrier fighter in the markings of the 204th Air Group, with characteristically clipped wingtips.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Type 32 was the first attempt to move the Mitsubishi A6M fighter toward higher performance. It received a more powerful Sakae 21 engine with a single-stage two-speed supercharger, but that took up room in the fuselage and the fuel load dropped. The designers also cut the folding wingtips off, so the span shrank and the outline took on the angular shape by which the machine is recognized at first glance. Agility about the longitudinal axis improved, but range suffered, and it was precisely that which proved a weakness in the fighting over the South Pacific.
Allied airmen brought in a reporting name of their own for the angular version and at first took it for an entirely new type. The markings of the 204th Air Group refer to a unit operating in the area of the Solomon Islands, where the fight for air superiority went on without a break.
The package consists of polystyrene sprues, a clear cockpit canopy and decals. Everything is supplied unassembled, without paints and without glue. Before spraying it pays to level the seams on the fuselage, because the upper side of Japanese fighters tends to be of one piece and every imperfection is visible on it. It is better to finish the landing gear bays and the interior before you close a fuselage half.
What modelers appreciate about the Type 32 is that its shape is easily recognizable even from a distance, so on a shelf it does not blend in with the other Japanese fighters. Wear is an interesting subject: machines from the South Pacific suffered from damp and sunlight, so their finish faded and flaked around the walkways of the wing.
