This resin set from Eduard contains underwing drop tanks of 110 gallons for a P-51D Mustang model in 1:48 scale. The castings offer a clean surface, crisp detail on the mountings and a more accurate shape than the split plastic parts from kits tend to have - so gluing halves together and cleaning up seams on the rounded body of the tank are avoided.
Drop tanks were crucial for the P-51D: it was thanks to them that Mustangs could escort heavy bombers deep over Germany and back, which at the turn of 1943 and 1944 fundamentally changed the course of the air war in Europe. The tanks were intended to be used once - when the fuel ran out, or before air combat, the pilot dropped them to lighten the machine.
First wash the parts in warm soapy water, which removes any mold release agent. Cut off the casting blocks with a razor saw and sand the mark down; protect your airways while sanding resin. Glue with super glue (cyanoacrylate) and apply a base coat before painting so that the paint holds on the smooth resin.
