A small set with a big effect. It replaces the exhaust stubs on the sides of the engine cowling of a plastic Mustang model. It is not an aircraft kit but an accessory. Injected plastic has a disadvantage with exhausts that cannot be worked around: the mouth is blind and the wall thick, because the mold has to open. A resin casting makes it possible to open the mouths for real and to thin the wall, so that the exhausts stop looking like glued-on pegs.
The Mustang was an American single-engine long-range fighter with a liquid-cooled V12 engine. The exhaust gas left through a set of short stubs led out on both sides of the cowling; on some machines they were covered by a fairing, on others they were left exposed. In service the area around the exhausts became heavily stained and an unmistakable trail of soot streamed behind them, which is one of the most characteristic features of the type.
You will make the job easier if you fit and paint the exhausts only once the camouflage of the fuselage is finished - paint must not get onto them anyway. Wash the casting in warm water with detergent, cut the casting block off with a saw and level the mating surface wet. Remove the original plastic exhausts from the kit and adjust the opening as needed. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue applied in the smallest possible amount, so that the fine rims do not flood. The exhausts are rewarding in terms of color: a dark base, rusty and brownish gray shades dry-brushed over it and finally a fine drift of dark pigment that you carry over onto the fuselage in the direction of the airflow. Darken the inside of the mouths so that the hole reads as deep.
This is an accessory for a plastic kit, not a model in its own right. It is supplied unpainted; paints, glue and the kit are not included in the package.
