According to the name the boxing is devoted to the machines of the Swedish fighter squadron that served under the flag of the United Nations. Pilot Replicas specializes in Swedish aircraft and its kits are among the smaller production runs — fitting the parts together asks for a steadier hand than mass-produced kits do.
The SAAB 29 was the first Swedish jet fighter with a swept wing and one of the first Western European aircraft of this concept at all to reach squadron service, in the early 1950s. It is characteristic for its short, bulky fuselage with a straight flow of air from the nose intake to the exhaust nozzle, which earned it a nickname derived from a barrel. The power came from a centrifugal-flow jet engine of British origin built in Sweden under license. The J 29B version differed from the basic configuration in an increased fuel load, and thereby in range. A group of these aircraft was deployed at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s within an international UN mission in Africa.
On a compact fuselage with a through air duct it pays to spend time on the inside of the intake and the nozzle — you look into them from practically every angle, so it is good to spray and blacken them before the fuselage halves are closed. On smaller production runs, count on the joints needing putty and sanding back, and so work out in advance which engraved lines you will have to re-scribe after sanding. Finish and spray the cockpit and the gear bays before the structure is closed. Lay a gloss coat before the decals, and a matte or semi-gloss one after them according to the look you want. Leave the metal areas around the nozzle until the end — metallics are hard to spray over and to mask.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
