An accessory set of photo-etched grilles for the models of two related vehicles built on the same chassis. One item therefore covers the StuG III Ausf. G assault gun as well as the Pz.Kpfw. III Ausf. L tank. The set is cut for the Tamiya kits and solves one particular but conspicuous shortcoming of plastic models: the grilles over the engine compartment.
A cooling grille is in reality a thin cut-through sheet that you can see through. On a plastic model it is usually a solid plate with an engraved grid - a dead area at first glance, which draws the eye from above, because a model is looked at precisely from above. Photo-etch, by contrast, really is cut through, so depth and shadow appear. The difference is one of the best ratios of result to work put in that the aftermarket offers.
A cut-through grille exposes the space underneath. Either darken the area below it with matte black or a very dark color, or suggest a piece of the radiator and the internal structure - otherwise bare plastic shows through and the effect is lost. The original plastic grid can usually just be sanded flat so that the photo-etch sits down. Glue the grilles with a negligible amount of super glue around the edge, never underneath the whole area; the excess would run into the cut-outs and seal them. Degrease the metal before painting and spray it with primer. In the weathering the grille works in your favor: dust applied dry and a fine wash in the cut-outs fill in the depth.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted; it is an accessory for a model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
