A plastic kit of the large carrier bomber North American AJ-1 Savage in 1:72 scale from the production of the firm Roden. By its dimensions the Savage belonged among the largest machines that ever served from the decks of aircraft carriers, so even a model in 1:72 scale grows to a size that has to be reckoned with when planning a display case.
The AJ Savage arose shortly after the Second World War as an answer to the requirement of the US Navy to have a carrier of a heavy load of its own taking off from a deck. The solution was unusual: a combined powerplant made up of two piston radial engines in the wing and one jet engine in the rear of the fuselage. The piston engines provided an economical range, and the jet was added during takeoff from the deck and in the target area. The high-set wing folded for storage on the ship, as did the vertical tail surface. The AJ-1 version was the first production variant; machines adapted for reconnaissance and in-flight refueling later came from the type as well.
With a large fuselage it pays to check the fitting together of the halves dry and, if need be, to reinforce the joint from the inside with a strip of plastic. Glue the engine nacelles and their cowling rings only after trying the angle, so that the model does not sit crookedly. Finish the cockpit and the interior before closing the fuselage. Mask the clear parts and varnish them together with the surroundings. Base the painting on the chosen period: early machines of the US Navy wore an overall gloss dark blue finish, later ones light gray with a white underside. Gloss surfaces need a smooth base, so before the decals go over them with a gloss varnish compatible with the paint used, and once it is dry unify the surface.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
