A three-pack of the first Italian self-propelled howitzer. The Semovente da 75/18 came about on the chassis of a medium tank and in North Africa it became the most useful Italian armored vehicle. The set makes it possible to build a whole platoon at once.
Responsibility details are not available.
The idea was simple: take the turret off a tank and seat a short howitzer of 75 mm caliber in a fixed superstructure in its place. A vehicle thus came about that was lower, cost less to build and had a stronger weapon than the tank it was derived from. From 1941 these machines appeared with Italian units first as infantry support, but it soon turned out that with a shaped-charge projectile they could handle enemy tanks too.
In the North African desert the self-propelled howitzer gained a reputation that no Italian tank attained. The low silhouette allowed it to fire from positions where the enemy did not find it for a long time, and the short howitzer was extraordinarily effective against fortified positions. The crew consisted of three men, and the cramped fighting compartment was among the things the veterans remembered longest.
This package holds three identical vehicles, so a formation corresponding to the real organization of Italian self-propelled batteries can be built at once. When painting it pays not to make all three pieces identical: a different degree of dustiness, slightly different toning of the sand and a different position of the barrel will give the group naturalness. Three finished models take up roughly the area of a palm on a base.
