This item is not a ship model but an additional photo-etched set. Strips of ship railings cut to 1:600 scale for American warships are etched on a thin metal fret. The number of strips and their total length are stated on the box of the set. The set is meant for modelers who want to lift the look of a small ship without going as far as a full conversion.
Railings are the detail on which the difference between injected plastic and etching shows most in small scales. A mold can produce only a heavy, opaque outline, or it leaves the railings out altogether. Etching has a real thickness below a tenth of a millimeter, so it is see-through and the deck behind it stays visible. That is what turns a ship model into one that holds up even in a close-up photograph.
Separate the strips with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface, not with cutting nippers, which twist etching. Degrease the metal with alcohol before gluing and flatten any ripple by running it over a smooth surface. Make bends at the corners of superstructures in a bending tool or between two metal rulers, so that the edge is sharp and does not round off. Glue with a thin super glue applied with a pin in small drops, and hold the part with tweezers until the glue takes. Apply paint only after gluing and in thin coats, or the gaps between the stanchions will fill in and the see-through effect will be lost. A thin sprayed coat of primer markedly improves the adhesion of paint to metal.
