An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:700 scale captures the Japanese battleship Nagato in her state of 1944, that is, at the time of Operation Sho-go 1, also designated Sho-1. Fujimi runs ship models in this scale in several parallel ranges, which differ in the degree of detail and in the treatment of the hull.
Nagato was the lead unit of the class of the same name and she entered service in the early 1920s. The main armament consisted of 41 cm guns in twin turrets. In the 1930s the ship went through a fundamental modernization: the stern was lengthened, the superstructures were rebuilt and the anti-aircraft armament was strengthened, which changed the overall silhouette. The state of 1944 corresponds to the final phase of her service, when the anti-aircraft armament was added to further and the ship took part in the fighting off the Philippines in the autumn of the same year. Nagato came through the war as the only Japanese battleship still able to steam and in 1946 she was sunk during the tests at Bikini Atoll.
Build in subassemblies: the hull and the decks separately, the superstructures separately, the small fittings at the very end. In 1:700 scale the most demanding thing is seating the anti-aircraft barrels and the boats, so prepare tweezers with fine tips and liquid cement. After spraying the primer and the covering color, use a dark wash, which will accentuate the breakdown of the superstructures, and a light dry brush on the edges. Set the deck apart from the hull already while painting, as masking small areas is a slow business in this scale. Photo-etched railings and ladders are supplied separately and lift the model a great deal. Choose the particular shades and the extent of the darker areas according to the instructions in the box.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
