About product

Wooden deck 1:700 - battlecruiser Kongo 1914, Artwox Model

An accessory for a kit, not a model. A thin wooden veneer with pre-printed plank laying and an adhesive layer on the back is laid on the plastic deck of the model. The set is made for one particular kit, Kajika KM70001, and for one particular state of the ship: the year 1914 in the name points to the early appearance of the hull, which differs fundamentally from the later rebuilds in the layout of the superstructures and in the shape of the decks. Check before buying, therefore, that your kit matches.

Working around superstructures, hatches and bases

This is exactly where a good wooden deck shows its worth, not on a flat area but in how cleanly it goes around whatever rises out of the deck. The openings for gun turret bases, hatchways, winches and mast feet are cut in the set beforehand, yet it pays to go through them one by one before gluing. Lay the veneer on dry and look at it against the light: wherever the veneer does not meet the outline of the plastic part, trimming it is easy now, while you can still handle it freely. The most common small mismatch arises at circular bases, where the plastic part tends to come out of the mold slightly larger in diameter than the opening.

Cutting tips

Always trim with a fresh blade; a dull one does not cut veneer along the grain but crushes it and raises splinters. Cut on a soft surface, ideally a cutting mat, and guide the blade in several light strokes instead of one heavy one. At circular openings it is safer to take material off in small bites and keep testing than to try to hit the diameter first time. The cut edge then only needs to be eased with a sanding sponge.

Who the set is for

  • builders of 1:700 ships who want to replace an engraved deck with wood
  • modelers who appreciate accurate openings around the deck fittings
  • owners of the matching kit in the early state of the ship
  • display models viewed close up

This is an accessory, not a model. The ship kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It points to the particular state of the ship the deck is shaped for. Later rebuilds have a different layout of superstructures and differently divided decks.

The openings are prepared in the set. It is advisable, though, to try the fit dry and trim any small mismatch before peeling the film off.

A fresh scalpel blade on a soft surface, in several light strokes. A dull blade crushes the wood and raises splinters.

It is not. This is an aftermarket accessory for a ship kit, which has to be bought separately.
