About product

Aoshima 1:700 Kimikawa Maru — a tender for floatplanes

An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:700 scale from the Japanese manufacturer Aoshima. The model belongs to the established Japanese series of 1:700 ships built in the waterline version, that is, with the hull down to the waterline — the finished ship is built onto a base or onto a sea plate and has no lower part of the hull. Kimikawa Maru is an interesting choice precisely because she is neither a battleship nor a cruiser: she is an auxiliary vessel that will widen a display case with a type often missed in collections.

The real subject

Kimikawa Maru was originally a merchant ship that the Imperial Japanese Navy took over and converted into a tender for floatplanes. The task of such a vessel was to carry seaplanes, to lower them onto the water and to lift them back up again and to provide them with fuel, ammunition and maintenance where no air base was available. The ship therefore carried cranes, a catapult and extensive deck areas for handling the aircraft. Kimikawa Maru served among other places in the northern Pacific in the area of the Aleutian Islands, where floatplanes provided reconnaissance over a practically permanently fog-bound sea. The ship was lost in 1944.

Building and painting tips

With 1:700 ships it pays to reverse the procedure: first assemble and paint the hull and the decks, and only then glue on the small superstructures, the cranes and the armament. Suggest the deck wood either with paint and a filter or use a self-adhesive wooden deck. It is advisable to add the thin elements — railings, ladders, antennas — with photo-etched parts or thin wire, because in plastic they come out heavy. Apply the paints with an airbrush in thin layers, otherwise the relief details will be lost. Complete the finished model with a fine wash in the recesses and light dust pigment on the sides of the hull.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of the Japanese war fleet in 1:700 scale
  • modelers who are looking for a less usual type of vessel than battleships
  • builders of display case arrangements of vessels on a sea plate
  • those interested in naval aviation and its support

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

An auxiliary vessel that carried seaplanes, lowered them onto the water, lifted them back with a crane and provided them with fuel, ammunition and repairs beyond the reach of land bases.

It is the waterline version, that is, the hull down to the waterline without the underwater part. The model is therefore built onto a base or onto a plate representing the surface of the sea.

The build itself is manageable, and what is demanding is working with the small parts in a small scale. We recommend tweezers, a sharp blade and painting with an airbrush in thin layers.

The contents of the package are not guaranteed beyond the manufacturer's data on the box. Photo-etched railings and a wooden deck are commonly bought separately with ships in this scale.
