The set from Artwox Model is not a model of the ship but an aftermarket accessory for a kit of the modern ocean liner Queen Mary 2 in 1:700 scale. A thin wooden veneer with the laying of the planks printed on it and with a self-adhesive back is glued straight onto the plastic deck parts. On a modern ship the effect is different from warships: the teak areas form a sharp contrast with the light hull and superstructures, and it is precisely that contrast which makes the model interesting. The veneer is cut for the Revell 05227 kit.
The Queen Mary 2 is an ocean liner of a British shipping company, put into service in 2004 and built for regular transatlantic traffic, not only for cruises. She differs from typical cruise ships by a greater share of a sharply cut hull and a massive bow section. On the decks there are extensive promenade areas with a wooden surface, which are among her recognition marks.
Because the model has predominantly light areas, it pays to glue the veneer on only after the hull and the superstructures have been sprayed. Masking wood is difficult: a self-adhesive surface does not get on well with sharp masking tapes, and when they are torn off there is a risk that the top layer of the veneer will peel away. If masking cannot be avoided, use a tape with low tack, stick it on the back of your hand first and take it off at a small angle. The veneer itself does not need painting; on a modern ship clean maintained wood looks better, so only a very discreet wash and a matte or satin varnish.
This is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a model of the ship. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
