This is not a ship kit but a detailing accessory for one. A thin wooden veneer with pre-printed deck planking and a self-adhesive backing goes onto the plastic deck of the base model. On this subject the accessory is especially rewarding: the ship has an extensive continuous deck area ahead of the superstructure, so the wood can be seen from every angle. The set is meant for the Meng PS-001 kit.
Engraved planks on a plastic deck are always a compromise in 1:700 scale: the grooves have to be deeper than the scale would call for, or they would disappear under the spray coat. The result is a surface that looks coarse close up. Veneer solves both at once: the plank pattern is carried by the wood and the print, so the lines can be fine, and the surface has a natural unevenness of tone that spraying can hardly imitate. On top of that, the laborious masking of the deck while painting the hull falls away.
A large area is also a risk, though. Before peeling the film off, lay the veneer on dry and mark two reference points in pencil to seat it by afterwards. Glue from the longitudinal axis toward the sides and keep forcing the air out with a soft cloth. If a bubble forms, pierce it with the tip of a knife along the line of a seam between planks, where the cut will not show, and press it down. Trim the overhang only at the end and put the deck fittings back.
This is an accessory, not a kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
