Seventeen Desert Air Force Mustangs over Italy in 1944 and 1945. A 1:72 sheet for the Mk.III and Mk.IVA versions with British, Australian and South African squadrons.
Responsibility details are not available.
The nickname Desert Air Force stayed with the units long after they had traded the desert for the Italian Apennines. By the fall of 1944 their Mustangs were escorting bombers and destroying railway junctions in the Po valley. The sheet gathers seventeen such aircraft and is one of the most extensive selections to be had on this subject.
For a modeler this sheet is interesting because it offers a direct comparison of two versions within one unit. Put a Mk.III and a Mk.IVA of No. 3 Squadron side by side and the difference in the canopy and in the shape of the vertical tail comes out far better than in a photograph.
On applying them: seventeen options mean a great many small letters and numbers. Always let the sheet dry only halfway, soak the excess water away with a towel and move the film with a soft-bristled brush. Finally give the whole model a matte coat so that the edges of the film disappear under a uniform surface.
It is worth noting that the Italian campaign was the main theater for Mustangs in Commonwealth service. While the American aircraft made their name escorting bombers over Germany, these aircraft carried out ground-attack duties and hung bombs under their wings.
