About product

Richelieu — a plastic battleship kit, 1:350 scale, Trumpeter

An injection-molded plastic kit of the French battleship Richelieu in 1:350 scale from Trumpeter, representing the ship as she appeared in 1943. It is a large ship model with a one-piece hull, photo-etched parts, decals and a stand with a name plate. The most striking feature of the real ship, and therefore of the model, is the main armament concentrated in two quadruple turrets, both placed forward. Following the instructions, the turrets can be built with the barrels elevated.

The real subject

Richelieu was a modern fast French battleship of the late 1930s. Her main armament was eight 380 mm guns in two quadruple turrets, unusually both placed ahead of the superstructure, which gave the ship a characteristic silhouette. After the fall of France and her later change to the Allied side, the ship went through a refit in American shipyards in 1943 and then served with Allied formations. It is exactly this 1943 form, with reworked anti-aircraft armament, that the model represents.

Building and painting tips

The one-piece hull makes the start of the build easier and gives a firm foundation. Glue the plastic parts with liquid cement for plastic and the photo-etched additions with cyanoacrylate glue. Apply a primer before painting; the hull is divided by color along the waterline, and Richelieu in 1943 wore a typical Allied camouflage scheme in shades of blue-gray, so an airbrush and careful masking of the color fields pay off. Fill and clean up the delicate superstructures, the rangefinders and the gun turrets with care. A dark wash and light patina will bring out the engraved deck texture; photo-etched railings and ladders can be added from aftermarket sets.

Who the model is for

  • For anyone interested in the French Navy and less usual warships of the Second World War.
  • For builders of large ship models who appreciate a one-piece hull and fine detail.
  • For modelers drawn to the unconventional silhouette with the artillery forward and to the camouflage scheme.
  • For collectors looking for an impressive model with a stand and a name plate.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It was a characteristic design feature of French battleships of this class: they concentrated the main armament in two quadruple turrets ahead of the superstructure. The model faithfully keeps that typical silhouette.

The model represents Richelieu as she appeared in 1943, that is after her refit and with reworked anti-aircraft armament, when the ship served on the Allied side.

The hull is in one piece, which makes the build easier and gives the model a firm and accurate foundation. The model is built as a full-hull version for display on the stand.
