The F-4EJ Kai is the Japanese modernized version of the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II fighter. Japan built Phantoms under license as the F-4EJ, and the Kai suffix belongs to the machines that later went through an extensive renewal of the radar and the onboard electronics. The two-seat cockpit therefore changed compared with the American original, and new control panels and indicators were added. In 1:72 scale the cockpit is small, yet it remains the first thing a viewer looks at.
The set brings color three-dimensional decals on decal paper with a raised relief. They replace hand painting of the instrument panel, the side consoles and the seat harness and bring sharp labels into the cockpit that cannot be drawn with a brush at this scale. The elements are shaped for the FineMolds kit in 1:72 scale.
The decals of the QD range from Quinta Studio have no adhesive layer of their own. The element is cut from the sheet, soaked for about fifteen seconds in lukewarm water and slid off the paper into place; a decal softener and a setting solution do not belong with them, as they would attack the printed resin. Paint the base in advance, degrease it and cover it with a gloss coat, on which the element will hold reliably. Work with tweezers and a pointed toothpick, settle the element in one movement and press it into the corners of the panel; on complex places a drop of cyanoacrylate helps.
The set is intended for a modeler who is building a Phantom with an open canopy and wants a finished interior without painting the small instruments. The package contains the decals; the kit, paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.
