About product

A photo-etched set for the Ki-61-Id Hien in 1:72 scale (Brengun)

This is an accessory for a plastic model, not a standalone kit. A fret of photo-etched parts of thin metal is intended for a model of the Japanese army fighter Ki-61 Hien in the Id version in 1:72 scale. Photo-etch is used where plastic is necessarily too thick because of the technology, that is above all in the cockpit, on the instrument panel, the seat belts, the landing gear bay doors and the small features on the surface of the airframe. The result is a finished model that stands up to close inspection. The fret is cut for the Tamiya kit.

The real subject

The Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien was a Japanese army fighter of the Second World War period and among the Japanese machines of the time it stood out by using a liquid-cooled V engine instead of a radial. Thanks to its slender nose it had a different silhouette from other Japanese fighters, and Allied airmen more than once mistook it for an aircraft of European design. The Ki-61-I Tei version, given in modeling practice as the Id, belonged to the late renderings of the first series and differed in the reworking of the nose and the armament.

Building tips

Cut the fret on a hard surface with a sharp scalpel; do not break the parts out with your fingers. Make the bends over the edge of a ruler or in a photo-etch bender, and on the seat belts a slight waviness helps, as it gives the impression of fabric. It is glued with cyanoacrylate applied with a pin in a minimal quantity. Degrease the metal before painting and apply a primer, otherwise the paint will peel off. We recommend finishing the interior before you glue the fuselage together, as once it is closed you will no longer reach the parts.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of Japanese fighters of the Second World War in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers who want a well worked-out cockpit even in a small scale
  • More experienced builders with experience of photo-etched parts
  • Those who display a model with the canopy open

This is a supplementary set, not a complete kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a fret of photo-etched parts that supplements a plastic model. You have to obtain that separately.

The interior parts before you glue the fuselage together. Once it is closed you no longer reach them and you would have to work around the problem awkwardly.

Cyanoacrylate applied in a minimal quantity, ideally with the tip of a pin. Cement for plastic has no effect on metal.

Among Japanese fighters it was exceptional for its liquid-cooled V engine, which gave it a slender nose and an unusual silhouette.

It is intended for the Tamiya kit.
