The set is not a model of the aircraft but an accessory to one: pre-cut self-adhesive masks for the glazed surfaces of an AJ-1 Savage model in 1:72 scale. Eduard is a Czech maker from Obrnice near Most and it produces the masks by die-cutting them from thin yellow kabuki paper, which follows curves well and leaves no adhesive residue on a clear part once removed. The parts are lifted out of the sheet, stuck onto the glazing and removed after spraying. The result is sharp frames of even width, which is very hard to achieve by hand, especially in such a small scale.
The North American AJ Savage was an American carrier-borne bomber of the end of the 1940s, built around the requirement to carry a heavy load from the deck of an aircraft carrier. It had an unusual powerplant: two piston radial engines in the wing were complemented by a jet engine built into the rear of the fuselage, which was used for takeoff and for a fast run. The AJ-1 version served with the US Navy, and the machines were later converted for further tasks, among others as aerial tankers.
Wash the clear part in lukewarm soapy water and degrease it, as a mask bleeds on a greasy surface. Lift the mask out of the sheet with the tip of a scalpel, lay it on and press it down; then rub the edges over with a toothpick, above all on the curves. First spray the color of the interior of the frames, then the base and finally the top camouflage, so that the glazing looks right from the inside as well. Spray in thin coats, as a thick coat on the edge of a mask creates a step. Remove the mask as soon as possible after it has dried and pull it at an angle along the edge rather than straight up. Should the adhesive hold too firmly, warming the area slightly is enough.
The set contains masks only. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
