An injection-molded plastic kit of the German Rhein-Flugzeugbau Fantrainer 400 trainer in 1:72 scale from the manufacturer Avis. It is an unusual subject that you will hardly meet in the ordinary range of aircraft models, so the finished model reliably draws attention among the usual fighters. In shape it is a clean, smooth machine on which the quality of the finish and the accuracy of the decals stand out.
The Fantrainer is a two-seat trainer with the seats in tandem, whose main peculiarity is its propulsion. Instead of a propeller on the nose it has a ducted fan built into the fuselage, driven by a turboshaft engine, so from the outside it resembles a small jet aircraft. The design came about in the second half of the 1970s with the aim of offering pilots training with behavior close to that of jets, but with substantially lower operating costs. The figure 400 in the designation is tied to the power category of the powerplant; a more powerful variant came later. The most significant operator of the type was the Royal Thai Air Force.
The fuselage has large smooth areas, so it pays to spend time cleaning up the joints and sanding the seams over, as every imperfection shows once the model is sprayed. Prepare and paint the cockpit before you close the fuselage, because once it is glued you will no longer get at it. Polish the clear canopy before gluing and fit it dry, and use a glue intended for clear parts that will not fog the plastic. The air intake and the exhaust duct of the fan are on view, and a darker shade inside brings out the depth well. Apply the decals over a gloss clear coat and then unify the surface with a matte or satin varnish according to the scheme you choose.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
