About product

SPAD 510 at war, a 1:72 Azur kit

A plastic kit of the French SPAD 510 biplane fighter in 1:72 scale from the Azur brand. The boxing is aimed at the wartime period of the type, that is the time when the aircraft no longer wore the striking peacetime colors of the fighter squadrons. A sister release of the same kit with the peacetime markings of the 7th Fighter Wing is made as well, and the two boxes differ exactly in the set of markings.

The real subject

The SPAD 510 was the last biplane fighter taken into service with the French Air Force. Its classic layout with fixed landing gear, an open cockpit and a liquid-cooled Hispano-Suiza 12X series V12 gave it good agility, but by the second half of the 1930s the all-metal monoplanes with retractable landing gear were coming in, and it could not keep up with them in speed or in climb. The armament consisted of four 7.5 mm machine guns. Only a few dozen were built, so the type was a marginal one even during its service. At the end of its career it moved to second-line and training duties, which is interesting from a modeling point of view, because such machines tend to have different, more sober markings and more noticeable wear.

Building and painting tips

A biplane stands or falls by its geometry. Prepare a simple jig that will hold the upper wing at the right height and dihedral until the glue has set. Paint the cockpit interior and the frame before you close the fuselage up. Spray the main surfaces separately while they are reachable and join them only together with the masking. Run the rigging between the wings at the very end, from stretched sprue or an elastic thread drawn between pre-drilled points. Coat the area with a gloss varnish before the decals and even the surface out with a matte one once it has dried. On a second-line machine restrained weathering pays off: worn paint at the wing root, more matte fabric areas, fine exhaust traces. Short-run molds usually call for more dry-fitting and a little sanding of the mating surfaces than mainstream kits.

Who the model is for

  • For anyone interested in the French Air Force at the turn of the 1930s and 1940s.
  • For modelers who want a biplane in the display case with wartime rather than parade markings.
  • For builders who dare to take on rigging and the assembly of a biplane wing.
  • For collectors of marginal and rarely built subjects in 1:72.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The plastic part is the same subject; the difference is in the set of markings. This box aims at the wartime period, the sister one at the peacetime machines of the 7th Fighter Wing.

Rather for a more experienced modeler. Seating the biplane wing and running the rigging call for patience and precision.

Check the contents of the package on the box of the kit.

It was the last biplane fighter of the French Air Force and only a few dozen were built. In a collection it shows the moment when biplanes gave way to modern monoplanes.
