About product

Short Sunderland Mk.I, Mk.II and Mk.III, Art Scale masking set in 1:72 scale

The Sunderland Mk.I, Mk.II, Mk.III masking set from Art Scale is a modeling accessory for the Special Hobby kit, not a model. It serves for covering the clear parts while spraying, so that the framing comes out straight and with a sharp transition between the paint and the glass. The designation one-sided means a single-sided set for the outer side of the glazing. According to the name, the set is intended for three early versions of the type.

The real subject

The Short Sunderland was a British four-engine flying boat with radial engines, derived in design from the civil Short Empire airliner. It served with Coastal Command for long-range maritime patrol, convoy escort and antisubmarine work; thanks to its great endurance and heavy defensive armament it was among the pillars of patrol service over the Atlantic. The Mk.I to Mk.III versions differed in powerplants, equipment and the shaping of the step of the hull planing bottom. The machine has extensive glazing: the pilots cockpit, a row of windows along the sides of the hull and the gun turrets, so masking is one of the most tedious parts of the build on this type.

How to use the masks

Wash and degrease the clear part so that the mask holds. Lift the parts off the carrier film with tweezers, lay them on the frame and press them down with a soft tool so that the edges seat along their whole length. On spherical turrets and curved transitions a small fan-shaped nick or careful trimming with a sharp scalpel right on the part helps. Spray in thin coats: the interior shade first, then the base coat and finally the top color. A heavy coat builds a ridge under the edge of the mask which stays as a step once it is lifted. Take the mask off as soon as the paint is dry to the touch. On a large model it pays to work in sections, so that the masks already pressed down do not have time to dry out at the edges.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of large patrol and maritime aircraft in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers who do not want to spend hours cutting tape to the hull windows
  • Anyone interested in the early Mk.I to Mk.III versions
  • Airbrush users who require a sharp transition between paint and glass

It is an accessory for a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

According to the name, the Mk.I, Mk.II and Mk.III versions. Before applying them, lay the masks on the clear parts of your kit and check the shape.

It is not. It is only a masking set; the kit has to be obtained separately.

Work in sections: apply and press down a group of masks, spray, and only then carry on. Keep the coats of paint thin.

The number of masks is stated on the box of the set. The single-sided set is intended for the outer side of the glazing.
