About product

Hauler 1:72 Tiger Ausf. H, a photo-etched detail set

A photo-etched set from the Czech maker Hauler for a kit of the Tiger heavy tank in the Ausf. H form in 1:72 scale. It is cut for a particular kit, the Revell one, so the outlines of the parts match the shapes of the plastic. The set is not a standalone model: it is a set of thin metal parts that will replace or supplement what an injection mold cannot manage at this scale.

Where the difference shows most

On the Tiger it is the upper surface of the hull that decides. The grilles over the radiators are in plastic necessarily merged into a surface with suggested engraving, whereas an etched grille really is see-through and you look underneath it. Tool brackets are in the same position: in plastic they are coarse bumps, in photo-etched metal thin straps with an eye and a buckle. It is precisely these two things that move a model out of the built-out-of-the-box category most markedly.

The real subject

The Tiger Ausf. H, later designated Ausf. E, was a German heavy tank deployed from 1942. It carried an 88 mm gun and heavy vertical armor; the combat weight was around 57 tonnes, which made demands on the transmission as well as on bridges and rail transport, for which narrow transport tracks were used. The early and late series differ in, among other things, the commander's cupola, the exhausts and the arrangement of the tools on the hull.

Building and painting tips

Fit the photo-etched parts as early as possible, while the surfaces are still reachable. First carefully cut off the plastic bumps the photo-etched parts replace and sand the area flat, as otherwise the new part will not seat. Run the bends exactly in the etched groove and overbend slightly, as the material always springs back a little. Dose the glue with a pin. Fit the grille over the radiator only once the space beneath it is sprayed in a dark paint; otherwise light paint will show through and the illusion of depth will be gone. Degrease the metal before painting and spray on a primer.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of German hardware of the Second World War in a small scale.
  • Modelers who want see-through grilles instead of merged plastic.
  • Those who already have basic experience of bending and gluing photo-etched parts.

This is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a standalone model. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a photo-etched detail set that you add to a plastic kit. The kit has to be bought separately.

Yes, with the parts the photo-etched items replace. Cut the plastic bumps off and sand the area flat, otherwise the metal part will not seat.

An etched grille really is see-through. If light plastic shows through beneath it, the illusion of the depth of the radiator is lost.

A sharp scalpel, tweezers with a fine tip, a hard surface, cyanoacrylate glue and ideally a photo-etch bending tool.
