The fifth sheet of the War in Ukraine series concerns the tracked hardware that the armed forces of the Donetsk Republic operated in 2022. According to the name these are the T-72B tank in the 1986 version and the BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicle.
The T-72B is a stage of development of the widespread Soviet tank, which has strengthened armor of the turret, a 125mm gun with an autoloader and a lower silhouette than its Western counterparts. The BMP-1 is an older tracked infantry fighting vehicle with a low turret, a short gun of low muzzle velocity and a rail for an anti-tank missile; it entered service back in the 1960s. Both kinds of hardware were seen in 2022 with hastily painted identification insignia, which differed markedly from standard peacetime markings. Not seldom these were simple geometric figures applied straight in the field.
Part-built vehicles of this period tend to have coarse surfaces, so even the place under a decal out first with a glossy coat applied only around the drawing. Let the insignia float on the surface and press it down only at the moment when it sits exactly. After the coat of varnish the outline can be held back further with light dusting. The small format of the insignia calls for a sharp tool and a steady hand.
