About product

Wellington GR Mk.VIII — landing flaps in 1:72 scale

On a model the landing flaps are among the surfaces where the difference between plastic and metal shows at first glance. A plastic part always has needless thickness and its structure is only suggested in relief, whereas photo-etched metal makes it possible to create a genuinely thin surface with elements cut right through. This set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard is intended for such a replacement on a model of the Wellington in the GR Mk.VIII version in 1:72 scale. It is not a model of the aircraft but an accessory for a kit, which has to be obtained separately.

The real subject

The Vickers Wellington was a British twin-engine aircraft with a geodetic framework of light sections covered with fabric. The GR Mk.VIII version served for patrol work over the sea and was fitted with radar; it flew with coastal units. The structure of the wing with its prominent flaps is clearly visible on the model particularly when seen from behind and below, that is, from the angles from which a model in a display case is often viewed.

Building and painting tips

First mark the outline of the plastic flaps on the wing and cut them away in small steps rather than in one pass, because plastic in a small scale cracks easily. Level the cut edge with a file and try dry how the photo-etched assembly seats. Long bends are most accurate in a bending tool; without one, use a metal ruler. Glue the joints with thin cyanoacrylate glue so that it flows in by itself. After degreasing, lay down primer and paint at the same time as the wing, otherwise the shade will not match. Bring out the inner side of the flaps with a dark wash, and spray any fine shadow beforehand, before the final assembly.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of British twin-engine aircraft in a small scale
  • Modelers who want the model with the flaps lowered
  • More experienced builders willing to cut into the wing
  • Those looking for a visible improvement from a small part

This is an accessory, not a kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. These are only the photo-etched parts of the flaps. The Wellington kit in 1:72 scale has to be bought separately.

Yes. The original plastic flaps are cut away and the edge of the wing is leveled so that the photo-etched assembly seats properly.

Best at the same stage as the wing, so that the shade matches. Degrease the metal beforehand and spray it with primer.
