These markings from Star Decals are prepared for models of Panther Ausf D and Ausf A tanks of the SS-Pz.Reg. 5 regiment in 1:72 scale. The name refers to companies 5, 6, 7 and 8, that is to the second battalion of the regiment. The set serves as an addition to the model you are building, and the series on this regiment follows on with further parts.
The Ausf D was the first series form of the Panther. You will recognize it by the front plate without a ball mount for the machine gun and by the cylindrical turret cupola. The Ausf A was given the ball mount and a new cast cupola with periscopes, so the two versions differ more during a build than they would seem to from a profile. The company numbers in the range 5 to 8 moreover give away which battalion a vehicle belonged to, which matters for the placement of the insignia on the turret. Turret numbers from one battalion thus allow several machines to be built that belong together historically.
Seat the turret numbers before you set about a wash and pigments. Even a base that has gone matte after masking out with gloss varnish, otherwise the edges of the design will show through. A damp brush with a little softener then draws the film down to the rivets and to the edge of the turret side. Never run a design across the pronounced fold of the hull side all in one go, though.
