This plastic kit of the Yokosuka K5Y2 in 1:72 scale from the Czech maker AZ model captures the floatplane version of the Japanese trainer biplane, which the Allied classification designated by the name Willow. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
A biplane on floats is one of those subjects that do not get lost on the shelf. The struts, the bracing and the float undercarriage give the finished model a striking shape even in the small scale.
The Yokosuka K5Y was a two-seat trainer biplane of the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service, used for the advanced training of pilots. It appeared in the first half of the 1930s and was built in large numbers by several companies. Because of the conspicuous orange-yellow finish of the training aircraft it was nicknamed the red dragonfly. The K5Y2 version is the floatplane, that is, the one meant to take off from and land on water, and it differs from the land version in its undercarriage and its balance.
On a biplane everything depends on patience when gluing the upper wing. Try the struts dry first, glue them only in pairs and let each joint set properly before you add the next. Use liquid cement for plastic applied with a fine brush, as any excess would run across the small surfaces and spoil them. It is advisable to assemble and sand the floats before attaching them to the fuselage. Paint the cockpit and the interior before closing the fuselage. Apply primer before painting, as it evens out the surface and reveals any remaining gaps. The conspicuous training finish is sprayed with an airbrush in thin coats, because a saturated yellow-orange shade needs an even base. Spray gloss varnish before the decals and a matte coat once they have dried.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
