While Europe drives with the cab over the engine, American long-haul transport stayed with the conventional layout: a long nose ahead of the windshield, the engine mounted lengthwise behind it and a living compartment behind the cab. The driver therefore sits behind the engine rather than above it, which means less noise and a calmer ride on runs of a thousand kilometers across the continent. The large displacement of the diesel engine, the chrome tanks on both sides of the frame and the pair of vertical exhaust stacks gave this kind of truck a look that even someone who has never read a word about trucks would recognize.
The build starts at the frame, onto which the engine, the transmission and the axles go, continues with the cab and ends with the sleeper and the accessories. On truck kits in this scale the injection-molded plastic parts are usually joined by rubber tires, plated parts for the chrome features and a decal sheet; the exact list of contents is given on the box. Glue and paints are not enclosed, and neither is a trailer.
A truck kit rewards care: a frame glued up straight holds the geometry of the whole vehicle, and a poor paint job on the cab shows from the other side of the room, so it pays to spray in thin coats and let the paint cure properly. Cut the chrome parts off carefully, because the mark left by the sprue gate is hard to repair on a plated surface. The finished vehicle is a genuinely big piece that takes over thirty centimeters on the shelf, and together with a trailer it becomes the centerpiece of a whole collection.
