An injection-molded plastic kit of the Heinkel He 177 Grief heavy bomber in 1:48 scale from the Czech manufacturer Special Hobby. It is a modernized release with parts from steel molds, supplemented with a clear sprue for the canopy and resin air intakes. The decals offer a choice of two aircraft, one in a typical bomber camouflage scheme with a mottled spray pattern and one in a finish for night operations.
The He 177 Grief was the only German four-engined bomber deployed in larger numbers during the Second World War. Its peculiarity was the arrangement of the powerplant: each wing held two engines placed side by side, which drove a single four-blade propeller through a common gearbox. From the outside the aircraft therefore looked merely twin-engined, even though it carried four engines. It was used in the long-range bomber role on the Eastern as well as the Western Front.
This is a kit with roots in short-run technology, so count on careful cleanup of the mold seams and on dry-fitting the parts before gluing. Wash the resin air intakes free of traces of the mold release agent before gluing and cut off the casting blocks; they are best glued with super glue. Reinforce the large fuselage and wings, and when painting, start from a primer coat - the camouflage and the mottling are easy to apply with an airbrush.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
