The range of sanding pads is distinguished by the color of the body according to fineness. The white version carries a pair of fine grits and is used at the moment when the material has already been taken off and only the smoothing of the surface before painting remains. The coarser grade of the same width has a gray body and serves for removing material.
It comes into play after coarser sanding, when the traces of the previous grit have to be removed. It also serves for smoothing filler, for preparing a surface under a gloss coat and for removing small unevenness from a sprayed finish. For removing material it is needlessly slow and it clogs up fast.
Six millimeters is a compromise between reaching into narrow places and the area the tool covers. The range also offers a narrower three-millimeter variant for hard-to-reach places and wider versions for extensive areas. The sanding pad is sold in single pieces.
Sanding pads differ from sandpaper in that they hold their shape and do not ripple. That is exactly why they suit places where an edge is to stay straight, whereas paper in the hand always rounds it off.
