Grit twelve thousand stands at the end of the whole abrasive range and hardly anyone would still call it sanding. The grain is so fine that it does not roughen the surface but smooths and brightens it. That is exactly what you need at the moment the model is varnished and a fine orange peel, a settled speck of dust or a matte patch from an over-polished edge has stayed on the surface.
The second great use of these pads is on canopies and on glazing. A clouded or scratched transparent part can be saved by working gradually through ever finer steps, and this one tends to be the last stage before the final polish with a compound. Go slowly, in one direction and with minimal pressure, because transparent plastic clouds easily when it warms up.
The best results come from working with water, into which it is enough to put a drop of dish soap. Wipe the surface as you go and check it against the light at a sharp angle, otherwise small smears will escape you. Approach edges and places with engraved detail carefully, because that is where the layer of varnish thins out fastest. The package holds two pieces, which with careful work will last for a number of models.
This step belongs right at the end. Whether you are finishing a car body or want a really clear canopy over the pilot, reach for it only once the coarser grits have done their job and the surface is even.
Never rush and never raise the pressure in an attempt to speed the result up. The heat from friction softens the varnish and instead of gloss a matte clouded patch appears, which can only be removed by varnishing again.
