COMMON PROTECTIVE – ZO

The Common Protective ZO shade

A modeling paint from the Real Colors range by AK with the manufacturer's part number RC070. It is listed as an opaque protective shade with the added designation ZO. Protective shades are overall colors in military palettes: they do not cover detail or fittings but the whole large areas of a vehicle, on which shading, dirtying and further work are only then built up. Compare the actual color against the color chart of the range.

Where you will use the color

Overall opaque colors are laid on the whole model as the first color coat after the primer. Depending on how you work with them further, they change the final look: by brightening the middles of areas you make the model look bigger, and with a darker tone in the corners and between the rivets you bring out the relief of the surface. The shade also serves for the small fittings, crates and jerrycans that are meant to belong to the same vehicle and not to stand out from it.

How to apply the paint

Shake the bottle thoroughly before use so that the settled pigment is stirred back in. The paint is made mainly for spraying with an airbrush; with a brush lay it on in thin strokes that are allowed to flow into each other. Thin it with the thinner meant for this range and spray in several light coats with a short pause between them; one heavy coat floods the rivets and the lines. Lay a primer on a smooth surface first, a gloss clear coat under decals, and pull the finished model together with a matte clear coat.
