Anyone who has ever compared photographs from Libya, from Sinai and from around Basra knows that desert dust differs from region to region. A limestone area gives a light, almost white dusting. Sand by the sea is coarser and tends toward yellow. A dried-out salt flat covers equipment with a grayish, alkaline coating that contrasts sharply with the surrounding earth. It is precisely this lack of uniformity that the set covers, so one model can have one color of dust on its running gear and another on its upper surfaces.
Beach sand is the lightest and warmest of the whole quartet, it suits coastal scenes and equipment hauled out of the water. The shade named after the war in the Persian Gulf matches the pale yellowish dust which in 1991 covered the armor of the coalition forces within a few hours. The alkaline dust is cooler and grayer, as though cement had been mixed into the sand. Desert ocher is then the tone most people think of at the word desert.
The powder is picked up on a dry brush and rubbed over an area with light strokes from top to bottom. A heavier application belongs where dust would have drifted, that is into the corners of a body, around the mountings of fenders and on the lower part of the sides. The shades can be mixed, and the more of them there are on a model, the less the result will look like an even dusting out of a single tub. It also proves worthwhile to dust the underside of the running gear before the model goes into a display case, because more is visible from below than a modeler expects while building. A fixer and brushes are not in the package.
