Modeling rock from filler or plaster is several evenings' work and hard to repeat over a large area. Rock foil shortens it: the relief is ready made and all you have to do is fit it to the shape of the surface. One piece measures 80 x 35 cm, that is 2800 square centimeters. That will do for a whole wall of a cutting, for a slope below a line and for several separate outcrops.
Dolomite rock is recognized by its pale, yellowish tone and by its division into vertical faces and towers separated by sharp crevices. The relief therefore works with edges rather than with rounded shapes. When fitting it, watch that the beds continue from the neighboring piece in the same direction. A bed turned the wrong way is the first thing the eye notices on a finished scene.
The foil is cut with scissors and formed over a prepared surface. First build the rough shape of the rock, lay the foil onto it dry and cut it with a small overlap. Choose the glue according to the material of the surface and try it on an offcut first. Run the joints along a break in the terrain, or hide them with rubble and growth at the foot of the face.
The relief comes out after a dark wash into the crevices and a dry brush with a paler shade on the edges. Leave room at the same time for a greenish hint at the foot of the face and for a paler crest.
The package holds one piece of foil measuring 80 x 35 cm. The glue, the paints, backing material and growth are not included, unless stated otherwise.
