Crumple Rock Foil Red Sandstone (60 x 40 cm)

What it is

The foil carries the relief of a sandstone surface and is intended for crumpling: you crumple it in your hand, open it out again and the breaks, edges and crevices that result keep their shape once stretched out. A flat foil thereby becomes a rock face, without your having to model stone piece by piece. A size of 60 x 40 cm corresponds to 2400 square centimeters, that is 0.24 square meters. Red sandstone has a warm rusty tone with visible horizontal beds, so a scene takes on quite a different character from gray granite.

Where you will use it

• a rock outcrop above a road or above a line
• the wall of a smaller cutting
• the bank of a stream and a gully in a slope
• filling out a face you are building from several pieces

How to work with it

First prepare the rough shape of the rock from a backing material. Cut the foil with an overlap, crumple it and open it out again; repeated crumpling deepens the relief and sharpens the edges. Then lay it in dry, press it against the surface and only at the end glue it, with a glue suited to your surface, having tried how it behaves on an offcut first. Run the joints between pieces along a bed or hide them with scree and growth.

Color fine-tuning

Leave the base in a warm rusty tone, draw a thin dark glaze into the hollows and go over the raised edges with a dry brush and a pale ocher. Add fine scree in the same shade at the foot of the face, because sandstone crumbles and debris below a face lends that credibility. Leave a hint of green only for places where moisture would hold, that is in the crevices and at the foot.
