About product

Sd.Kfz. 251/22 Ausf. D Pakwagen - 1:16, Das Werk

An injection-molded plastic kit of the improvised late-war tank destroyer in the large 1:16 scale. Das Werk is a newer European brand and this model is built on its own, modern-designed molds - and it shows: a completely newly developed 7.5 cm PaK 40 gun, a complete interior including the engine with opening covers, detailed running gear with torsion bar suspension, a pivoting front axle with steered wheels, an elaborate brake and fuel system, three track options made of individual links, photo-etched parts, four marking options and the possibility of building the early or the late version. The package alone weighs around three kilograms - this is not a model for a shelf among books but for a display case of its own.

The real subject

The Sd.Kfz. 251 was the basic German half-track armored personnel carrier, which carried infantry on practically every front. The 251/22 version came about at the end of the war out of sheer necessity: a 7.5 cm PaK 40 L/46 anti-tank gun was fixed into the hull. The result was a cheap and quickly available but improvised tank destroyer - the long barrel projected far in front of the vehicle, the crew stood in an open, thinly armored hull and the recoil was at the limit of what the light chassis could bear. Fewer than three hundred were built and they were deployed from the turn of 1944 and 1945. It is that unusual silhouette that makes it a rewarding subject which will not be lost among tanks in a display case.

Building and painting tips

You get the whole interior here, so plan the build so that you do not close it up before you have painted it. Deal with the engine and the chassis first and only then with the hull; the hull is also open, so the inside will always be visible and there is no point in saving time there. Glue with liquid cement for plastic, sand in several steps after filling and check the surfaces with a primer - in 1:16 even a small seam appears that nobody would find in 1:35. Assemble the gun slowly so that it holds its axis. Paint with an airbrush, the camouflage in thin coats, then gloss varnish, decals and a matte coat. Weathering: dust and mud on the running gear and the tracks, wear on the edges of the hull, greasy marks around the engine. The open hull is crying out for a diorama with figures and cartridge cases.

Who the model is for

  • Experienced modelers - a full interior, the gun and the tracks call for patience.
  • Fans of late-war German equipment and of unconventional improvisations.
  • Diorama builders who want to make use of the open hull.
  • Collectors of large formats with room for a sizable model.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

The kit offers three track options made of individual links. It is therefore not a rubber band track but assembly piece by piece - in 1:16 scale that is the only way to a faithful result.

No. An extensive interior, a separate gun and tracks of individual links make demands on experience. In 1:16 the surface will also reveal every imperfection in filling and sanding.
