A plastic kit of the missile destroyer of project 956E in the generous 1:200 scale. The letter E in the designation sets the export form delivered to the PLA Navy apart from the basic Soviet project 956. The large scale leaves room for fine detail on the superstructure, the masts and the deck equipment.
The Sovremenny was a Soviet destroyer designed above all for fighting surface ships and for supporting landing operations. It differed from most contemporary vessels in its steam powerplant with high-pressure boilers at a time when its Western counterparts were already moving to gas turbines. Its unmistakable silhouette is formed by the twin gun turrets fore and aft, the angled anti-ship missile canisters along the sides of the superstructure and the helicopter platform aft with a telescopic hangar. The export vessels were handed over to the PLA Navy around the turn of the millennium and in their day were among the strongest surface units of that fleet.
Assemble the hull and sand the joints before you start fitting the superstructure – in this scale every step on a seam shows. Apply the base coat in a thin layer so that the engraved deck lines are not lost. Break the gray down into several slightly different shades and lighten the centers of the large surfaces a little, otherwise the side of the ship looks flat. Leave the thin mast bracing and the railings until the end, when the rough work is done.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
