About product

AH-64A Apache: tail rotor 1:35, Reskit (for Trumpeter)

This is NOT a kit of the helicopter. It is a 3D-printed replacement part from Reskit in 1:35 scale that replaces the plastic tail rotor on a model of the AH-64A Apache. It is intended for the Apache kit in 1:35 scale from Trumpeter.

Why the tail rotor in particular

The Apache has an unusually arranged tail rotor and it is one of its most striking recognition features. It is not four blades spaced evenly at 90°, but two two-bladed teetering rotors on a common shaft, with the inner pair set roughly 55° off the outer one. The blades thus form an asymmetric cross in the shape of an X. Originally this was a mechanical solution, made for clearance for the control linkages, but during testing it turned out that the uneven spacing of the blades reduces the noise of the tail rotor compared with a conventional four-bladed arrangement. On a model this detail is very visible, because in profile the tail rotor is one of the first places the eye falls on. The plastic part tends to be thick, with soft leading edges and a coarsely rendered rotor head. 3D printing gives thin, crisp blades and a fine head with linkages that are practically impossible in an injection mold.

Watch the version

The AH-64A is the early version of the Apache. The later AH-64D Longbow carries a prominent spherical radar above the main rotor head and looks obviously different. Before buying, therefore, check that you really are building the A version: the part is tied to a particular kit, not to the whole Apache family.

Working with the part and fitting it

The parts come on print supports; cut those off with a sharp blade and sand the surface. Cyanoacrylate glue or epoxy: cement for polystyrene does not work here, as it does not dissolve printed resin. Wash the parts with water and dish soap before painting, otherwise print resin residue will lift the paint. Sanding creates dust that is harmful to health: sand wet and do not inhale it. And above all: the thin rotor blades are fragile and break easily, so glue them on at the very end, once the painting and the decals are finished and you no longer have to handle the model.

Who the part is for

  • Builders of the AH-64A Apache 1:35 kit from Trumpeter.
  • Modelers who dislike a thick, soft plastic rotor.
  • Anyone interested in a faithful rendering of the typical asymmetric X-shaped rotor.
  • Those who already have experience with 3D printing and cyanoacrylate.

The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted, without the base kit. Glue, paints and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not a conventional four-bladed rotor with blades at 90°. The Apache has two two-bladed teetering rotors on a common shaft and the inner pair is set about 55° off the outer one, so the blades form an asymmetric X. The original reason was mechanical clearance for the control linkages; during testing it also turned out that the uneven spacing of the blades reduces the noise of the tail rotor.

It is not. It is a 3D-printed replacement part, the tail rotor. You have to have the helicopter itself as a kit separately.

The part is declared for the Trumpeter kit of the AH-64A version. The A version is the early one; the later AH-64D Longbow carries a spherical radar above the main rotor and differs in other details as well. Compatibility with other kits or versions is not stated here; check what you are building.

Cut off the print supports, sand the surfaces wet (resin dust must not be inhaled), wash the parts with water and dish soap and glue them with cyanoacrylate or epoxy: cement for polystyrene will not hold. The thin blades are fragile, so attach them right at the end of the build, after painting.
