About product

Kampfgruppe Hansen – Battle of the Bulge (4 figures) in 1:35 scale (MiniArt)

An injection-molded plastic kit of four figures in 1:35 scale from the manufacturer MiniArt. The set depicts German soldiers in winter equipment from the period of the battle in the Ardennes. Besides the figures the package contains sprues with weapons and equipment and a small photo-etched part. The figures are modeled in dynamic poses, so the set can be used as a vignette in its own right or to complete a larger winter diorama with vehicles.

The historical context

The Ardennes offensive (the Battle of the Bulge in Anglo-American literature) began on December 16, 1944 and was the last major German attack on the Western Front. Kampfgruppe Hansen was one of the battle groups of the 1st SS Panzer Division and in the opening days of the offensive was to cover the southern flank of the neighboring battle group's advance. The German plan counted on a rapid breakthrough to Antwerp; in reality the advance stalled on the terrain, a shortage of fuel and the stubborn defense of American units. The offensive ended in failure and meant the exhaustion of the last reserves. Waffen-SS units in this phase of the war are also connected with war crimes committed against prisoners and civilians; the set is a modeling depiction of a historical reality, not a celebration of it.

Building and painting tips

Remove the figures with cutters, sand the parting lines carefully (arms, shoulders, the hems of coats) and glue them with liquid cement for plastic. Bend the photo-etched part on a bender or between the jaws of pliers and glue it with cyanoacrylate glue. Apply a primer before painting – with winter figures a light base works well. Keep the uniforms in a muted palette (gray-green, gray, field brown), and never paint winter capes and white camouflage in pure white – a grayed white or one with a hint of beige is better, otherwise it looks flat. Build the skin up from a mid flesh tone, deepen the shadows with a wash and brighten the raised areas; the faces of soldiers in winter can take slightly reddened cheeks and nose. Only suggest the eyes with a dark line. Set the leather straps and ammunition pouches apart from the canvas items. Add dust, mud and if you like snow (modeling snow paste) to the boots and trouser hems and tie it all together with a matte varnish.

Who the model is for

  • builders of winter dioramas and vignettes from the Ardennes offensive of 1944 and 1945
  • modelers of armor in 1:35 scale who are looking for accompanying infantry
  • more experienced figure modelers – the set also contains a small photo-etched part
  • collectors of figures from the Second World War period

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

Yes, the set contains sprues with weapons and equipment and a small photo-etched part. The exact contents are given in the instructions in the package.

Building the figures is manageable, but the small photo-etched part and painting winter uniforms call for a little experience and patience.
