This kit from Mikromir captures the American nuclear ballistic missile submarine John Marshall with hull number 611 in 1:350 scale. In this scale a submarine model comes out at a size that still fits a display case comfortably but at the same time carries honest surface work: the openings in the outer casing, the retractable equipment on the sail and the control surfaces are all legible in 1:350. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
The John Marshall was one of the American nuclear submarines with ballistic missiles created at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s as the second generation of the underwater deterrent. These are nuclear-powered boats with a cigar-shaped hull, a tall sail and a missile section inserted behind it. The characteristic feature of these vessels is two rows of vertical tubes for ballistic missiles amidships. Submarines of this generation served for decades and some of them were later converted for other tasks, among them carrying special forces, which also brought a change of classification designation.
With submarine models the result stands or falls on a smooth hull. Fill the joint of the two hull halves and sand it carefully through successively finer grits, or polish it, because every scratch will show after spraying. Test the sail and the control surfaces dry and watch that they are square; a submarine built askew is distracting even from a distance. The model is usually built on a stand or as a waterline version, so decide in advance, because that affects how you fill the bottom of the hull. In color a dark hull will do, but do not neglect the transition to the anti-corrosion coating below the waterline and the fine shading of the individual plates; a careful wash will draw out the small openings in the outer casing.
