About product

F-4E/2020 Terminator 1:48, Meng (Turkish Air Force)

An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:48 scale from the modern manufacturer Meng (a 2025 release, officially licensed). The package contains pre-cut photo-etched parts in stainless steel, painting masks, a metal pitot tube and decals with three schemes. Particular attention goes to the Turkish arsenal: AGM-142 guided missiles, SOM cruise missiles, the AN/ASW-55 data link pod, the AN/ASQ-153 laser designation pod and the EL/L-8222 jamming pod. The flaps and the leading edge slats can be built extended or retracted, the horizontal tail surfaces are movable and the airbrakes are optionally open. The finished model is just under 40 cm long.

The real subject

The F-4 Phantom II was among the most widespread combat aircraft of the Cold War, two-seat and twin-engine, with its typical dihedral wingtips and anhedral horizontal tail. The F-4E version, unlike the older F-4C/D, has a built-in cannon in the nose; that was a direct consequence of the experience of Vietnam, where it turned out that guided missiles alone were not enough in maneuvering combat. At the turn of the millennium the Turkish Air Force had its Phantoms upgraded by the Israeli aviation industry: the machines were given a new multirole EL/M-2032 radar, a digital cockpit with a wide-angle head-up display, HOTAS controls, modern navigation and the ability to carry new weapons. The result is the Terminator, an aircraft from the 1960s that is still in active service, and it can be told from the classic Phantom by its extra aerials, different equipment and precisely that Turkish armament. Turkey plans to keep it until the end of the decade.

Building and painting tips

Glue with thin cement for plastic; fix the photo-etched parts and the metal pitot with super glue. Finish the cockpit and the wheel bays before you close the fuselage. The enclosed masks will speed up the canopy glazing and the wheels. Spray a gloss coat before the decals and, once dry, even it out with a flat one. The Turkish gray wraparound schemes and the older camouflages are best handled with an airbrush; spray hard boundaries over a hard mask and soft transitions freehand.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers who want the Phantom in its most modern form, with Israeli avionics and in active service
  • Collectors of F-4 versions who want the variant with a built-in cannon
  • Anyone interested in the Turkish Air Force and in weapons such as the AGM-142 and the SOM
  • Intermediate and experienced builders; photo-etch and masks are in the package

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
