The main rotor of the Sikorsky utility helicopter with its blades folded and with the set of restraints that hold them in that position. Cast in resin for the ICM kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The specification for the new army machine contained a requirement that the previous generation had not allowed for: movement over long distances in the hold of a transport aircraft. To make that possible the type was given a low silhouette, a folding vertical tail and main rotor blades that the crew folds back along the tail boom. The pair of T700-series turboshaft engines seated flat above the cabin helped as well, because they raised the outline of the machine no more than was necessary. The folded machine is then rolled up the ramp and is in the air within a few hours of the transport landing.
Folding was not automatic. The crew released the pins, turned the blades back one by one and secured them with straps and stands so that the wind could not move them. It is exactly this equipment that gives the model the sense of a scene: a machine just unloaded, with ground crew around it and the blades tied above the tail.
The casting goes on at the very end of the build, once the paint and the markings are done, because the folded blades reach out over the whole tail and get in the way when the model is handled. Anyone who wants to go further can add a trolley with a support on which the end of the blade bundle rests; such a small thing gives the scene scale and at the same time shows that the machine is out of service for the moment.
