Roundels and other national markings for the two best known British fighters are offered by this sheet in 1:48 scale from the Xtradecal brand. These are not decals for particular machines but a set of national symbols that can be used to complete or to replace the markings supplied in a kit.
The national insignia of the Royal Air Force went through a number of revisions during the war. The bright prewar rings with a white band were toned down for lower conspicuity, a dark type without white and red appeared on the fuselages, while more prominent forms stayed on the wings. Fin stripes were added, and the ratios of the diameters of the individual rings and the shades of blue and red changed. Anyone building a Spitfire or a Hurricane from different periods needs a different shape every time, and that is exactly where a separate sheet of insignia helps, because a kit usually holds only one set.
Roundels are placed symmetrically, so measure the position in advance and mark it lightly. Lay the film on a gloss surface and press the water out of it outward so that the circle does not stay wavy. Over the outline of a wing or a fin, a stronger softener and a gentle press with a cotton bud help.
