A sheet of water-slide decals in 1:48 scale from the British maker Xtradecal. The subject is the interceptor variant of the Tornado in the markings of No. 56 Squadron RAF, which earned the nickname Firebirds from its phoenix badge. The package consists of a printed sheet and instructions with the schemes; the plastic kit of the aircraft has to be obtained separately.
The Tornado F.3 came about as the fighter development of the European Panavia Tornado combat aircraft. Against the strike version it was given a lengthened fuselage, more powerful engines and a radar for directing medium-range air-to-air missiles. The task of these machines was to patrol over the North Sea and catch intruders far out from the coast. In front-line Royal Air Force service this version lasted from the mid-1980s until 2011 and managed to take part in operations over the Persian Gulf and the Balkans as well.
Decals hold best on a smooth gloss base, so coat the surface with gloss varnish compatible with the paint used before applying them. A softener will help the design settle into the engraved lines, and excess water can be drawn off with a cotton swab. Once dry, even the whole surface out with a matte or semi-matte coat.
The package holds only the printed sheet with the markings. Paints, varnish and softener are not part of it.
