An injection-molded plastic kit of a historic American car in 1:24 scale from the Ukrainian manufacturer ICM. According to the name it is a release that, besides the car, also contains figures of American sport car drivers, so a small genre scene can be built straight from the box. The combination of car and figures is rewarding: the figures give the model both scale and a story and at the same time cover what cannot be hidden on an open body.
The Speedster was a lightened sporting derivative of the mass-produced Ford Model T. It came about by stripping the production body down to a bare frame with a tank, a seat and simple fenders, or else by fitting a body from an independent supplier. The result was a light, open car with a high chassis, used in prewar America for informal racing and for fast driving on country roads. It is precisely the exposed mechanics, the wire-spoke wheels and the simple frame that make this type a rewarding subject for a model.
Paint the frame and the drivetrain separately and finish them before joining them to the body, because once assembled the underside is out of reach. On this type the wire-spoke wheels are the dominant feature: the spokes come into their own when picked out with a dark wash and the hubs are left in a different shade. The painted surfaces of period cars tended to be deep and rich, so several thin coats and a gloss coat with a gentle polish pay off. Build and paint the figures separately; work the faces and hands up from a base flesh tone through a dark tone in the shadows to a lighter tint on the raised areas, and finish the clothing with a dry brush.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
