A plastic kit of the British carrier-borne strike aircraft in the S.4 version, in its late production form. Trumpeter has covered the type in two boxings, the early and the late form, so a collector can build both stages of its development side by side. In 1:48 scale the massive nose with its contra-rotating propellers stands out, and that is what makes the Wyvern one of the strangest shapes in postwar naval aviation.
The Wyvern was designed as a heavy carrier-borne strike aircraft for the Royal Navy and its development dragged on through the whole of the nineteen forties. Production machines of the S.4 version were powered by an Armstrong Siddeley Python turboprop, which turned a pair of contra-rotating propellers. That is what gave the aircraft its unmistakable look and its reputation as a machine that does not forgive mistakes. Wyverns went into action from the decks of aircraft carriers during the Suez Crisis in 1956 and lasted only a short time in service, because jet types quickly replaced them.
The contra-rotating propellers dominate the model, so clean the mold seams off the blades carefully and check that they face the right way before you glue them. The dark blue-gray naval scheme rewards a smooth surface and fine shading of the large areas. The worn look of deck service and salt deposits around the exhausts are a rewarding weathering theme on carrier machines.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
