This item falls among canopies, that is among clear accessories. It is one vacuum-formed pilot's canopy in clear film for a plastic kit of the Soviet Yak-1 fighter in its early production form, 1:48 scale. It replaces the injection-molded part from the kit.
The early form of the Yak-1 has glazing made up of a fixed front section, a sliding section and glazing behind the pilot's head, a fairly large area through which the whole cockpit can be seen. Injection-molded plastic in this scale tends to be thick and distorts the view optically at the edges of the frames. Vacuum-formed film is noticeably thinner, so the canopy comes closer to the real thickness of glass and the interior behind it stands out. One piece in the package means you have a single attempt at cutting, so it pays to practice the procedure on an offcut beforehand.
First trace the outline with an alcohol marker directly on the film. Cut with repeated light passes of a sharp scalpel, never with one heavy stroke, as vacuum-formed film cracks. For rigidity the inside can be temporarily filled with a water-thinnable filler. Level the seating edge on abrasive paper laid on a flat board and test between passes how the part sits on the fuselage. Finish and spray the interior before you fit the canopy. Glue it with a PVA glue for clear parts or with the minimum of thick cyanoacrylate glue outside the visible area; ordinary cement for plastic would fog the material. Suggest the frames with narrow strips of masking tape and apply the finish in thin coats.
