An injection-molded plastic kit of the heavy cruiser Aoba in the usual naval scale of 1:700, from the Japanese maker Hasegawa. The 1:700 scale is the standard for warship models, because even large ships stay a reasonable size and can be built as a coherent collection. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
The Aoba was the lead ship of the pair of Japanese heavy cruisers of the same name completed in the second half of the 1920s. The main armament consisted of six 20.3 cm guns in three twin turrets, supported by anti-aircraft and torpedo armament. The ship had a characteristically tall forward superstructure, a single funnel with a curved top and equipment aft for handling float planes, that is a catapult and a crane. During her service she went through several refits that changed both the anti-aircraft armament and the look of the superstructures. That is exactly why it pays to decide in advance which period you are building, because the finish and the details differed over time.
Ships in 1:700 stand or fall on patience with small parts. It pays to spray the hull and the decks before fitting the superstructures, because afterwards neither a brush nor a nozzle will reach into the corners. The deck and the hull sides are usually painted in different shades, so have masking tape with a clean edge ready. Masts and cranes are necessarily thicker in plastic than they were in reality, and many modelers replace them with thin wire or stretched sprue. Railings, radars and ladders from photo-etched parts move the result forward most, but they are not part of this kit. At the end it helps to even the surface out with a matte varnish and to bring out the vertical faces of the superstructures with a fine wash.
