Railings are among the first accessories that modelers add to a warship, because they change the impression of the whole deck fundamentally. This aftermarket set from Flyhawk brings photo-etched railings matching the arrangement found on modern US Navy ships. It is not a ship model but frets carrying fine brass railings.
The photo-etched railings replace the thick plastic strips and give the decks and superstructures stanchions and rails that are thin to scale. The version for modern ships takes account of the typical number of horizontal rails on contemporary vessels, so that once painted the model looks realistic.
Offer the strips of railing up to the edge of the deck, secure them with small drops of cyanoacrylate glue and bend the part gently in the curves. Spraying gives the best result, either before fitting or after a light primer, which improves the adhesion of paint to brass.
An accessory for the advanced; the photo-etched parts are no substitute for a kit and are glued with cyanoacrylate.
