A plastic kit of the American submarine USS Balao SS-285 in 1:700 scale from Hobby Boss. The lead boat of the most numerous American submarine class.
Responsibility details are not available.
The kit captures the American submarine USS Balao, the lead boat of the class of the same name, in 1:700 scale. Thanks to the scale the model is small and suits a collection alongside surface ships, a harbor scene or an addition to a larger diorama. Hobby Boss has a complete range of submarines in this scale, so a comparison of American and German types of the same period can be built side by side.
The Balao class followed on from the older Gato class and differed above all in a stronger pressure hull, which allowed a deeper dive. That was a decisive advantage in action, because the boat could go deeper than the enemy depth charges were set for. These were large diesel-electric submarines with long range, which formed the backbone of the American submarine war in the Pacific and played a decisive part in cutting Japanese sea traffic.
The model has few parts, so the cleanliness of the surface decides the result. Fill and sand the lengthwise seam of the hull, or you will see it along its whole length once painted. Apply the dark shades of American submarines with an airbrush in thin coats; a thick layer would clog the engraved detail of the deck. Suggest the wooden parts of the deck platform with a fine difference of shade rather than a strong contrast. Go easy on the weathering; on a model this small it is enough to suggest a deposit at the waterline.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
