The first production Dauntlesses were taken over by the Marine Corps in 1940, and the second production version with larger tanks went to the Navy. Both share what sets them apart from later machines: the arrangement of the instruments, a different layout of the controls and a different gunsight. It is this early form that the set captures, while the later versions have their own items from the brand.
An instrument panel in 1:48 scale is a test of patience. A dial face measures a fraction of a millimeter on the finished model, and the modeler has three routes to choose from: paint it, use photo-etched metal with film behind it, or glue on a printed section. Printing wins on legibility. The needles, the scales and the colored sectors are printed at a resolution a brush cannot reach, and the bezel of each instrument has a height of its own, so that the glass beneath it optically recedes.
The panel comes with the side consoles, the seat with its belts and the surfaces around them. They are applied in the usual way: cut them out around each motif, dip them in lukewarm water, transfer them, settle them and let them dry. Skip the decal softener, as the printed resin cannot take it. The surface underneath has to be smooth, dry and free of grease.
On a finished model a combination of both looks good: the printed panel under an open canopy, with the surrounding surfaces sprayed so that the shades run into one another. It can all be pulled together with a light matte clear coat over the whole compartment, which evens out the sheen of the paper carrier against the painted plastic around it. The rear station of the same aircraft is covered by a separate item, and the plastic kit is bought separately.
